Zurich & Hamburg Jazz Clubs: Two Encounters That Made Me Think About Racism

 

zurichOver a period of about ten years, I worked as a valuer, describer, an expert in a specific area of Chinese collectibles. From time to time I travelled along with a friend who was similarly employed. He lived in Maine, but his accent was that of the southern states. Jazz of course was for me, after hours, a key interest. In jazz clubs in both Zurich and Hamburg I became aware of the reality of inculcated racism.
